Emsella For Pelvic Floor

Strengthen Pelvic Floor Muscles and Address Urinary Incontinence With Emsella

Emsella Treatment for Pelvic Floor

Urinary incontinence can be inconvenient, painful, and embarrassing. It can make you afraid to go out in public. Urinary incontinence is often the result of a pelvic floor disorder, particularly weakness of the pelvic floor muscles.

If you want your life back – the confidence to do all the things you want to do without fearing a leak or having to wear uncomfortable protecive underwear, Emsella might be for you.

What is Emsella?

Emsella is a revolutionary non-invasive treatment for pelvic floor weakness. It uses electromagnetic stimulation to restore strength and tone to your pelvic floor muscles so they can better do their job. Essentially, it induces thousands of kegel-like contractions in a single session, restoring control. Clinical studies have shown an average 64% improvement in urinary incontinence and a 57% reduction in the need for hygiene pads.

What Conditions Does Emsella Treat?

Emsella treats urinary incontinence related to pelvic floor dysfunction or muscle weakness. Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles that form a sling-like structure in your pelvis. It supports vital organs including the bladder, rectrum, and in women, uterus.

Emsella is best suited to treat:

  • Stress incontinence: This is when urine leaks after increased abdominal pressure. Normally this happens when you laugh, sneeze, cough, or engage in physical activity. Stress incontinence can be a complication of pelvic floor surgery, but is more often related to loss of support related to chronic cough, connective tissue disorders, obesity, constipation, heavy lifting, smoking, menopause, and pregnancy and childbirth. Stress incontinence is far more common in women, and many women don’t seek treatment.
  • Urge incontinence: Urge incontinence is a sudden, compelling urge to void your bladder. This is typically caused by involuntary contraction of the muscles around the bladder, failure of the bladder to stress, or hypersensitivity of the bladder. However, it can be exacerbated by poor pelvic floor function.

Who Is A Good Emsella Patient?

Emsella is recommended for patients with urinary incontinence caused or exacerbated by pelvic floor weakness. It is not helpful for urge incontinence caused by an infection or by a substance sensitivity (for example, some people develop urge incontinence after drinking caffeinated beverages).

Who Should Not Use Emsella?

Emsella is non-invasive and suitable for most patients. However, you should not use Emsella if you are, or may be, pregnant. Because it uses electromagnetic stimulation, it should also not be used by anyone who has any metal implant. This includes copper IUDs.

You should talk to your healthcare provider before trying Emsella.

What Happens During an Emsella Treatment?

A typical course of Emsella treatment is twice a week for three weeks. Each session lasts 30 minutes and can be scheduled around your life. We do Emsella in our spa, and you will remain fully clothed. There is no need for anesthesia. However, you should not wear anything metal on the lower half of your body, such as belt buckles. We recommend dressing comfortably.

You will sit on an Emsella chair and the system will focus targeted electromagnetic energy on your pelvic floor muscles. You will feel tingling and contractions in your muscle, but should not experience pain. (If you do, tell the technician right away).

Once the treatment is over, you can immediately go about your life. There is no downtime. Many patients schedule sessions during their lunch break. Your healthcare provider may combine Emsella with other treatments, such as lifestyle adjustments, biofeedback, or medication.

When Will I See Results?

You may see some improvement right away, but you will see full results after a few weeks as your pelvic floor muscles regain strength and tone. Because Emsella is targeted, it should not impact any other muscles.

Emsella does not work for anyone and if it does not work for you, you should go back to your healthcare provider to discuss other options. Because it is noninvasive some doctors are likely to recommend it early in the process.

It’s possible that you may need to repeate the treatment if your incontinence comes back after a few months or years.

How To Keep Urinary Incontinence From Returning After Emsella?

Your provider will likely have recommendations for how to keep your pelvic floor healthy. Emsella is a way to get a healthy pelvic floor, but you need to do work to maintain it. Some things that you should do:

  • Eat a healthy diet. Make sure to include enough fiber, as constipation can put stress on your pelvic floor.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Quit smoking. If this is hard for you, talk to your doctor about a cessation program.
  • Use proper lifting techniques. Lift from your knees, not your back.
  • Avoid consuming anything that causes urge incontinence for you. Typical triggers include alcohol, caffeine, carbonated beverages, citrus (including citrus fruit, juice, and in some cases citrus-flavored soda), chocolate, pineapples, tomatoes, cranberries, sugar and artificial sweeteners, raw onions, sour cream, prunes, and excessively spicy food. This is, though, different for each person. Keep a diary and track which foods cause you problems.

Because Emsella is non-invasive, it can be repeated if needed, but it may be better to change your lifestyle to avoid future problems. We recommend having at least one treatment every 3 months for maintenance.
